The Finishing Process

Finishing a deck is a multi-step process, each step important to the safety and integrity of the deck, and your family’s enjoyment of it. When Landry’s is on the job, we’ll start by completing a thorough inspection of the deck.

Although decks are built to last in extreme temperatures, the southern California sun, wind and sand will inevitably create wear and tear. Keeping your deck maintained is key. We’ll also inspect your deck for any necessary repairs, like testing the joists and joints and making sure all bolts and screws are tightly fastened. Then we scrape the wood. This scraping allows us to look for soft spots and signs of decay. This is the time to bring your deck up to the highest safety standards!

Once the deck is safe and stable, we power wash, applying a paint thinner or varnish stripper to help remove the previous deck stain. Some areas of the deck may need a little more attention to remove stubborn paint or debris. If there was no previous deck stain, this still gives the wood a clean base for the next step. After another power wash we let the deck dry. This cleaning step is critical in providing the best possible deck surface to finish.

Before we start we’ll consult with you to select the varnish, stain or sealant you’d like to showcase on your deck.
