The best solution

             The best solution to seriously water damaged carpet is disposing of the material in question, drying the area, and putting down new carpet.

 When it’s too late to save

             If you wish to save your damaged carpet, it is possible to do so as long as the carpet has been wet for less than 48 hours and the water was not sewage-based.

 If you want to save the carpet

            If you are set on saving your existing carpet, it will have to be Water Damaged Flooring | Landry's Paintingremoved and dried.  Make sure it is dried flat or it may not reinstall correctly.  While the carpet is drying, remove and dispose of the pad.  The sub-floor will also need to be dried to avoid damage and mold.

             If you are saving the carpet, after it has dried it will need to be cleaned, disinfected, sanitized, and cleaned again.
